The Refugees A Tale of Two Continents edition by Arthur Conan Doyle Reference eBooks
I thought Arthur Conan Doyle did a wonderful job of this story of a 17th century Huguenot who was a soldier in King Louis' army until the day the king forced him to make a choice. Knowing that he could never recant his faith and fearing the persecution that lay ahead for followers of Jean Calvin, he leaves the country with his bride-to-be and her father. An American who has been visiting Paris and taken in by the Huguenot family helps them escape France but on the way to their promised land they encounter such obstacles as a gigantic iceberg, a Jesuit priest, and a band of ferocious Iroquois warriors. In spite of being written in the vernacular of the 19th century, the author has penned an adventure with enough cliff hangers that will keep you spellbound until the end of the book.

Brilliant book
This is a story of romance, adventure, and perilous escape , as a family of Huguenot merchants with a son in the military escapes religious persecution in France by fleeing to North America. It is wonderful, exciting, and it reminds you that good people come in every nationality, and that the good Samaritan is one who helps others despite religious differences.
Conan Doyle was an amazing writer. If you wish he's written more Sherlock Holmes' stories, try some of his other novels. You'll be glad you did.
I can't begin to say enough about this book. I was a big fan of Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" as a youth. However, I was not aware that he wrote historical novels and my guess is that most people are not aware of it either. Well, everyone should be! For descriptive writing, I have not read anything this good since Patrick O'Brian's novels. Doyle's descriptions of life, romance and adventure in France during the late 17th century reign of Louis the IX are so real you feel you are there at Versailles. Doyle then takes you on a dangerous voyage to French Canada then on to the American frontier where you can feel the danger lurking in the treacherous forests. The plot twists and turns throughout the book always surprising and keeping you on the proverbial edge of your seat. I read a lot of books and this one stands above most that I've read and it's right up there with O'Brian. Don't miss this one!
.
Both adults and young adults, especially those of Huguenot descent, will love this classic adventure story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The reader will coincidently learn a great amount of good history while racing through through the book's imaginative scenes of traveling to Canada. The main characters are stranded on an ice floe, attacked by Indians, and hunted by an unpleasant Jesuit.
Courage and bravery, derring-do and a sense of honor characterize not only the featured Huguenot family, but also woodsmen, soldiers, a crippled Catholic priest and an Iroquois woman married to a Frenchman.
Great story.

If you like adventure, this is an excellent book. Also, if you like historical fiction, it also fits that category. Very well written, as you would expect from this gentleman.
I have loved this book for years. People forget that Conan Doyle began life as a teller of adventure stories and writer of historical novels. This tale of Huguenots who flee from France to the New World to begin a new life is every bit as exciting as Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities". If you have only ever read the Sherlock Holmes stories, give yourself a treat and read this.
Excellent reading.
